Cold Symptoms Vs Flu Symptoms – Natural Home Remedies

Can stress cause flu and colds

Cold Symptoms vs Flu Symptoms?Cold vs flu

What is the difference between the common cold and the Flu? Are they the same?  Which is worse?  All great questions.  We have all had a cold at some time in our lives and some are worse than others.  Many of us have had the flu but did we know which was which?  Neither are very pleasant.

Colds and flu are caused by viruses so antibiotics are no  good and therefore most people live with the sniffles and aches. Sometimes taking over the counter remedies and hoping the symptoms will disappear in a few days.  There is much more you can do to ease through the maze of remedies for colds and flu.

Home Remedies

  • Vitamin C
  • Zinc
  • Eucalyptus
  • Sage
  • Gargle Salt Water
  • Ginger
  • Licorice Root Tea
  • Honey
  • Water
  • Steam
  • Saline
  • Positive AttitudeNatural Remedies for Colds

Vitamin C should be taken on a daily basis because of the healing properties which I also mentioned in detail in a previous post.  Liquid Vitamin C is by far the best in my opinion.

Zinc, sucking on Zinc lozenges can cut colds short, from an average of 8 days to an average of 4.  Vitamin C should not be taken with Zinc as it makes Zinc less effective.

Water drinking lots of water is crucial as the body naturally loses fluids when you have a cold or flu. Mouth breathing also increases dry throat and coughing so water is very important.  Water should be part of your everyday diet for optimal health.

Eucalyptus Relieves congestion put a few drops of the oil in a hot running shower and inhale the steam as it accumulates.

I am sure there are much more you can think of including the old faithful Chicken Soup which does actually work.

Flu, on the other hand, has high temperature and body aches and really is not pleasant at all.  For those of you that have had the flu know exactly what I mean.  Most of the above help with the flu also but you will have to add something to take your temperature down and keep it down.  Listen to your body and rest as much as you can. Also, organize someone to be there to look after you to enable you to rest.

Cold vs Flu both being a nuisance in your life, therefore take a pro active approach to your health and make sure you eat nutritious food, exercise, meditate and take the appropriate supplements. This will cut down how many colds you get. A positive attitude to health goes a long way to avoid all sorts of disease and pain.

Personally, I never get colds, I refuse to get them.  I take my supplements all year round and have a positive outlook that I will never get a cold.  Having a positive frame of mind regarding your life and your health is part of staying healthy. There are plenty of books, audios and people to surround yourself to keep and stay positive.

Flu Shots

Would you take a flu shot?  When you get a shot they inject you with the virCold vs Fluus so that you can build up your immune system to it. Therefore you will get the flu as soon as you get the vaccine into your bloodstream. Depending on your immune system will depend on how bad you get the flu which was injected into you.   There are so many strains of flu with new ones every year how can you possibly be vaccinated against all of them?

The decision is yours but please do your research first before doing anything about the shots.

Data collected from Canada and Hong Kong during 2009-2010 showed that people who received the seasonal flu vaccine in 2008 had twice the risk of getting the H1N1 “swine flu” compared to those who hadn’t received a flu shot.

This post is my opinion only and everyone must do what they think is best for them and their families.

Please do not change or alter any medications or supplements without consulting your medical practitioner.

Please share this information with others, also please comment on your cold vs flu experience.

My 4 year old son woke up with a blocked nose this morning. It is especially upsetting for him as he is one of those children who sucks his blankey. This is inhibited if he cannot breath through his nose and he gets very annoyed. This morning I was trying to find something to help him. We didn’t have any luck blowing his nose so I told him we had to make him sneeze. I said I needed to go and find a feather so I could tickle his nose and make him sneeze. This made him laugh and he said “I like this plan”. At least it lightened the mood. Needless to say, I didn’t have a feather to hand but I did have a menthol sweet. I watched him carefully eat it and it cleared his nose. However I wouldn’t say it was a safe option giving a child a hard boiled sweet. Do you have any other suggestions?

You can get olbas oil and put a little under his nose, it is a natural remedy, you can also put it on his clothes or pillow. You can also put it on his blankey, you need only a very small amount. Also you can play games to help him learn to blow his nose to relieve the blockages.

These are all great remedies but you forgot one other effective one which is raw garlic. It has antibacterial and antiviral properties and not only does it prevent you getting colds and flus, but if you do get them and start taking it immediately, it will stop further complications . The key is to start it as soon as you feel something. It has saved me many, many times and I get sick way less often. I’ve also been experimenting with oregano oil but I find garlic to be more effective for me.

Great point, I actually did a whole post on Garlic https://manageanxieties.com/what-is-garlic-good-for-lower-blood-pressure-cholesterol-and-immune-system because it is such a great product. Experimenting is always good as each of us can have a different reaction to remedies, the one good thing is it is all natural.

    Hi Helen
I should get the flu jab with a health condition I have. But I always put it off & stick to taking multivitamins & probotics daily. Up to now I’ve only had maybe 2 colds in the last 10 years.
    Great site

This is super info as regards home remedies. I caught the flu a couple of years ago and I’ve never been in so much pain in my life. I vowed to ALWAYS get the flu shot. The information you’ve provided will provide that extra protection against any future bouts. Thanks so much Helen!

I hear about so many people who go to the hospital when they have a cold or the flu. I have learned to just live with it. If it gets really bad, then maybe go see a doctor. Usually these things will clear up on their own (at least in my experience). I am a huge advocate for Vitamin C. When anyone in our family gets a slight sore throat, we make sure to get Vitamin C asap. It sure seems to help. It sure seems like taking lots of fluids and getting plenty of rest are big factors in recovery. Thank you for this information, good stuff!

I would rather have a cold than the flu any day of the week. I never thought of being proactive in preventing cold and flu. I will try loading up on vitamin C during the cold and flu season. Thanks.

Thanks for this informative post, Helen

I struggle a bit at this time of the year when it’s cold and dark outside. I try to eat healthy the whole year instead of doing it just when I get sick. I do see the importance of being positive as a way to prevent getting sick.

I am curious. How do you prevent being sick mentally and spiritually? Do you do affirmation daily?

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Helen,

This is very informative post. I always rely on medicines bought from drugstore every time colds and flu strikes. I didn’t know that water can be a remedy for these type of sickness.

By the way, your website looks amazing. Clean, organized post and easy to read. I will keep visiting your site to know more.

    Hi Helen,

I didn’t realize you could help prevent colds or flu. I just assumed that since they were a virus that it was your anti-bodies only that could fight them. What do I know, you learn something new every day. I guess I’ll be looking out my multi-vitamins again. I’m assuming these will also help fight viruses?

Vitamin C and others help with immune systems. Multi Vitamins you will have to look to see the amount of immune fighting vitamins are in the one you choose.

I really thought that the Flu and a Cold were the same things! This is interesting, as I had a “cold” a few weeks ago but it must’ve been the flu because I had a temperature and was stuck in bed for a while. You say that you never get colds, then these remedies must work! I am going to try this as am tired of getting conjunctivitis year after year because of these awful bugs going around.

Yes it does work and also watch your self talk about it too. Make sure you have positive words like I have healthy eyes and I choose to see everything with joy and love. Instead of I am tired of getting conjunctivitis 🙂

Very informative post Helen. I have always been against flu shots, until last year when I got my first one at 42 years old. My arm hurt terribly for 4 months afterwards, so I will not be getting another anty time soon!

    Thanks for the info!
