Natural Remedies that really work for sleep

Noise machine for sleep

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

Do you count sheep?  Do you toss and turn all night?  Without sleep, we cannot heal our bodies or get the necessary rest our body needs to function properly. The search for natural remedies that really work is something that eludes many people.

Sometimes no matter how old you are or what is going on in your life, for no reason you just can’t sleep.  Now some people blame it on health issues, diet issues, Natural Remedies for Sleepingmental issues but really sometimes it is for no reason at all.

I get those times when I feel I just have to get up and do something, sometimes I write, or clean, or organize or watch tv, there is no reason for it and I don’t go looking or a reason.

However, sometimes we want to go to sleep and we need to go to sleep. Healing takes place when we sleep and the less time for sleep the less time for healing ourselves.

Side Effects Of Sleep Deprivation

Did you know lack of quality sleep can cause

  • depression
  • impulsive behavior
  • weakened immune system
  • increased chance of cardiovascular disease
  • loss of cognitive ability or brain fog
  • reduced athletic performance

Reasons why you may not be able to sleep.

Stress of chronic illness can cause less sleep also heartburn, diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease, respiratory problems.

Natural Remedies that really work for Sleep

  • Melatonin Spray or Tablets
  • Lavender (a plant in your bedroom will  help)
  • Valerian
  • Chamomile    Melatonin Spray perfect for a natural sleep spray

Melatonin is produced by the brain naturally, however,  Hormones are released usually later afternoon early evening when the body is getting ready for sleep.  This gets interrupted when you watch tv for long periods, use tablets, computers, and phones.  This stops the melatonin from kicking in naturally.  This is the reason most people cannot fall asleep easily and now it is also affecting children due to the increase in the use of electronics.

Lavender is a great help in relaxation it has the ability to eliminate nervous tension and relieve pain – a study of college students found that using lavender oil improved the overall quality of sleep by 60%.

Valerian can be added to your bath water to aid in sleep, it works like a sedative on the brain and nervous system. Valerian can be found in oils, pills and liquid form.   Some people use valerian for depression, mild tremors, epilepsy, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)Rescue Sleep for a Natural Sleep Aid

The stress of trying to go to sleep can cause you to get less sleep. You wake up tired and then more stress and anxiety. Viscous cycle!!!  I know sometimes when I go to bed and think I am going to sleep easily I find myself thinking about all sorts of things.  Some of them are to do with work, sometimes family and sometimes things that happened in my past.  We can re-hash our pasts over and over and this can cause us more and more stress and less and less sleep.  What I do for one of my strategies is I keep a notepad by the side of the bed and whatever I am thinking about or rehashing over and over I make a note to deal with it when I get up the next day.

How The Kasina Can Help

  • The Kasina comes stock with a 60 minute Sleep audio and visual stimulation track.
Stimulation enhances low frequency and decreasing high frequency brain waves.
  • The results are less arousal or wake ups

Meditation

We can re-hash our pasts over and over and this can cause us more and more stress and less and less sleep.  What I do for one of my strategies is I keep a notepad by the side of the bed and whatever I am thinking about or rehashing over and over I make a note to deal with it when I get up the next day.

Before Bed Routine

  • No caffeine products at least 4 hours before
  • Turn off the TV at least 30 mins before  (tv in the bedroom is very bad for sleep)
  • Meditate before bed
  • Read something relaxing
  • Burn some lavender oil or candles
  • Drink some chamomile or lavender tea
  • Take some Valerian
  • Take some Melatonin
  • Take a bath with lavender oil in it.

All of the above can help your body turn down the stress levels and relax because they are natural remedies that work.

The brain needs to have darkness and relaxation to know it is time to sleep.  Unfortunately, we are on our computers, phones, tablets so much and therefore the brain is getting light all the time and does not shut down for sleep like it should.

Hi, thanks for this post! Sleep is essential and very important. I do take melatonin and I find it works. I will definitely look into the other products you mentioned. My website is similar, as I talk about depression. It is a great read. Thanks again.

I could never fall asleep due to stress, but I wasn’t even stressed most of the time! My mind just wanders and thinks about anything, the past, random scenarios that could happen, anything! The only way I can get to sleep is by reading a book because my mind is just focused on one thing and I end up falling asleep with the book open usually. I tried Melatonin when I was sick and couldn’t fall asleep but it didn’t seem to help me at all. It might have just been because I was sick and had a big headache though. I might try it again now that I’m healthy.

Reading is always good providing it is not something too stimulating and horrific. Finding what works for you is always the best. What works for one does not always work for everyone.

Thanks for the natural remedies and suggestions that can help when we can’t sleep. I sometimes can’t fall asleep because my mind won’t shut off! Some people say you should get up and do something instead of tossing and turning. I feel if I do that I will get too involved in what I’m doing and then never go back to bed. Next time I can’t sleep I will try one of your suggestions.

Hopefully one of them will work for you. We all have the problem of our minds not shutting off. Getting a strategy to help do that is key to a good nights sleep.

You are so right. I suffer from chronic pain and I also have sleep apnea so I have to wear the C-Pap mask. It’s very difficult for me to get a good nights sleep.

I take melatonin and a prescription for sleep as well. I also take opioids for pain and now because of the addition problems the government is dictating to doctors not to combine certain medications.

So I’m being weened off my sleep medication. Do you think some of the other products you mentioned will work for me?

The best thing to do is try them one at a time and find out which one works best for you. Some will work better than others depending on what you are going through at the time.

There is a common natural remedy for babies, lettuce bath. You boil some lettuce leafs and use the water to bath the kids. I think it should work for adults too, but I haven´t try it. This may be another remedy for getting a good sleep.

Yes, I agree with all of this especially the melatonin. When I am on the road, getting used to new beds and pillows can be quite a task. the meditating helps, too for me.

Yes travelling can take its toll on your sleeping. I remember when I traveled a lot it took me awhile to realize I could take lavender pillows with me and melatonin to help.

Some really great advice, which has given me some food for thought. The need for good quality sleep has been a passion of mine for a number of years, as without it one’s life can very soon become really miserable.

It seems to me that the less sleep that I get, the later my body is okay with staying up. It is a vicious cycle indeed.
Melatonin helps me get to sleep and stay in a deep sleep. Though it doesn’t always work for me.
One thing that I have quickly discovered is to make sure that I will get a full nights sleep when taking melatonin. If not, I wake up not wanting to crawl out of bed.

I need to look into Lavender oil also.

Lavender is wonderful and sometimes it is good to change it up so your body does not get used to the same thing all the time. The main thing is to get plenty of sleep naturally without the aid of chemical drugs.

Helen, isn’t it funny how the cat can always sleep. In my experience the only time they wake up is if I am asleep and they feel I should be awake. Then back to sleep they go!

I don’t count sheep because I have never been able to visualise them long enough. My brain tends to go off in another direction before I become sleepy.

I grow a lot of lavender and often pick some flowers and put them on my dressing table. To get a fresh burst of scent I just brush them lightly. I also grow hops so I should try something with them. I once did try making a hop syrup but it fermented and the pressure blew the bottoms off the bottles. What a mess. It smelled nice though.

I like your notepad idea. I used to do this when I worked but will start this up now to try and relieve my night stress.

Funnily enough, I do often use a device, my Kobo eReader to help me sleep. Since I can turn the light way down, and not get any blue light, and I have some soft novels stored I fall asleep reading in quite a short time. In fact I wake up with my head pillowed on the eReader!

I also use Bach’s Rescue Remedy if the low light reading doesn’t work.

As soon as my bath tub is installed on to the lavender oil.

    Great article and good information.
    See you around.

    Ciao

Bach Rescue Remedy is a great one especially if you are highly stressed out. I like that you read before you sleep and that it does help you too. I too grow lavender and it really has a wonderful smell and it is perfect for keeping in the bedroom. Thank you so much for your comments Helen.

What a wonderful resource and what I needed right now! I am shocking, as I drink too much coffee and have too much on my mind, which generally prevents me from nodding off naturally some nights.

But, like you, I just get up and do stuff without reason and if for some reason in time it catches up, I nap during the day or have the occassional sleep in.

    Thank you for sharing

    Cheers
    Jo

Hi Jo, if you can nap in the day to catch up then that is always good. Cutting down on your coffee might help also LOL Glad you found this post useful
