Vitamin D and Kids up to 50% are deficient.

Today kids do not play outside as much as they used to and they are not getting the amount of sunshine and fresh air as they should for their Vitamin D needs. Deficiency in Vitamin D in the USA is very common.  Kids used to get their Vitamin D from milk but less and less kids are drinking milk during the day as the schools do not provide it anymore.

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone and is meant to be obtained through the sun and not your diet.

Its a well-known fact that the skin needs sunlight to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps bones grow, and develop properly. The deficiency of vitamin D can lead to weak muscles, ricket, fractures, and pains.

32% of children and adults are Vitamin D deficient according to the CDC Centre for disease control.  The National Nutrition Health Association found that 50% of children are deficient.  Anyone in their older years can also be deficient if they do not get out as much as they used to.  Sitting in the garden or on the porch for 15 -20 minutes a day can go a long way to helping.

Let your kids get outside more into the sunshine, let them play and do more activities outside.

    That is true that today’s children play less outdoors and that way don’t get enough vitamin D. I try always to encourage my kids to spend more time out then inside in front of TV. There are other sources of vit D too luckily. Supplements are good but also fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel are very good sources of vitamin D.

    There are so many benefits of vitamin D apart from the most famous one on how it drives calcium in our body. You have presented the information in a very easy to understand manner. You are correct that we need our kids to go out and play and have more natural vitamin D. However, today’s generation is more inbound then playing outbound. Anyway thanks for providing the suggestion of products for vitamin D. I will go check them out.

      Yes it helps if the kids are outside even for a short time but being inside all the time and then in cars instead of walking it limits the amount of time they are actually in the fresh air and sun.

    Very interesting information that everyone needs to be educated on. Today children are to coped up playing video games and not being active outside. This leads to high obesity, lack of circulation, and getting the vitamins from natural light that they need. I am a mother and I know how important playing and social skills children need to function in this world. I always try to bring my child out doors, but at the same time apply sunscreen to protect him. I also give him a multi vitamin to make sure he gets what he needs to grow.
